2009 GLSCL All-League Team
Garner, Jefferson named league??s top pitching prospects
DELAWARE, Ohio ?? After pacing the Great Lakes Summer
Collegiate with an unblemished 6-0 record, the Lima Locos?? Ajay Meyers (Ashland
University) capped off his phenomenal season by earning Lou Laslo Pitcher of
the Year honors on Monday. Lake Erie??s Kolbrin Vitek (Ball State
University), meanwhile, garnered Gary Henschen Player of the Year accolades
after capturing the GLSCL??s Triple Crown.
Myers?? perfect record and 1.96 ERA led the Locos to a first
place in the 2009 regular season, while his 34-to-4 strikeout-walk ratio ranked
tops in the league. The 6-foot-7 righthander out of Hamler, Ohio held the
opposition to a .248 batting clip en route to his first GLSCL All-Star
appearance. While starting for the Red Team in that game, Myers became the only
pitcher to strike out the side in the first inning.
Vitek, from Bryan, Ohio, earned Player of the Year honors after
leading the league in hitting (.400), home runs (6) and runs batted in (38).
His Triple Crown performance was the first such recorded trifecta in the
league??s 23-year existence. In addition to those numbers, Vitek led the GLSCL
in slugging percentage (.741) and doubles (16), while also scoring 27 runs and
lining six triples. His record-setting season also earned him the Ron Miller
Top Position Prospect award and a 2009 GLSCL All-Star MVP award.
Stark County??s Perci Garner (Ball State University)
and Cincinnati??s Mike Jefferson (Louisina Tech) also earned
league recognition for their efforts on the mound this season by earning Tony
Lucadella Top Pitching Prospect honors. Garner, a hard-throwing righthander out
of Dover, Ohio, led the Terriers with a 1.50 ERA and a 2-0 record in 11 relief
appearances. During that span, he recorded two saves and struck out 16 batters
while holding the opposition to a .245 batting clip. With a 94-plus mph
fastball and a devastating slider, the sophomore established himself as an
up-and-coming force on the mound.
Jefferson, on the other hand, is a southpaw from Batavia,
Ohio. The sophomore went 2-1 this season with a 2.61 ERA in 31 innings pitched.
He also recorded 43 strikeouts in those 10 appearances and held opponents to a
.189 batting average.
And after serving 14 years as Lima head coach, the Locos?? Rob
Livachak took home Joe Carbone Manager of the Year accolades after leading
his squad to a league-best 28-8 record in what marked his final season as Loco
head coach. Livchak guided the Locos to its only two league championships in
1993 and 2004.
